Seeing 507A and 507X together can make it look as though there are two complete four-colour toner sets. There aren't.
The standard 507A black cartridge is rated for approximately 5,500 pages. Moving to the 507X black cartridge doubles the approximate yield to 11,000 pages, making it the higher-capacity choice for businesses that get through black toner regularly.
Colour works differently. Cyan, magenta and yellow are supplied as 507A cartridges and each is rated for approximately 6,000 pages. There are no corresponding 507X cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges in this family.
In practical terms, the choice between 507A and 507X only needs to be made when you're buying black toner. When cyan, magenta or yellow runs low, you simply replace the relevant 507A colour.
The 5,500-page 507A black cartridge can make sense for a printer that handles moderate workloads or where keeping the initial cartridge spend lower is important.
A printer used throughout the day for reports, invoices, forms, correspondence and other text-heavy documents is more likely to benefit from the 11,000-page 507X. Doubling the rated black yield means fewer interruptions for cartridge changes and more printing between replacements.
Price alone does not tell the whole story. The 507X costs more upfront because it contains more toner, so comparing the current cost per page is more useful than comparing the two cartridge prices in isolation.
You can also run 507X black alongside 507A cyan, magenta and yellow in a compatible printer. For workplaces that print mostly black text with occasional colour charts, logos or graphics, that combination can match real-world toner usage better than treating every colour equally.
