CartridgesDirect stocks genuine and compatible toner cartridges for every major laser printer brand available in Australia. HP LaserJet, Brother, Canon imageCLASS, Kyocera, Lexmark, OKI, Fuji Xerox and more. Whether you need a single mono toner for a compact home office laser or a full colour set for a busy office workgroup device, both genuine OEM and compatible alternatives are listed on every product page with page yield and pricing for both options.
Toner cartridges are used in laser printers. They contain powdered toner rather than liquid ink, which means they don’t dry out between uses, print faster than inkjet and deliver a lower cost per page at volume. If you’re not sure whether your printer uses toner or ink, the Finder tool identifies the right consumable type by printer model.

A toner cartridge is the consumable used in laser printers. Unlike the liquid ink in an inkjet cartridge, toner is a fine dry powder made primarily from carbon and polymer particles. During printing, a laser beam draws the page image onto a photosensitive drum, which attracts the toner. The toner is then transferred to the paper and bonded to it by a heated fuser unit. The result is text and images that are sharper, more smudge-resistant and more water-resistant than inkjet output.
Because toner is a dry powder rather than a liquid, it doesn’t dry out between uses. A laser printer that sits on a desk for two weeks and is then turned on will print without the nozzle-clogging and wasted-ink cleaning cycles that affect inkjet printers in the same situation. This makes toner the more practical choice for offices where the printer isn’t used every day, as well as for high-volume environments where speed and per-page cost are the priority.
Toner and ink are not interchangeable. The cartridge type is determined by the printer, not the buyer. The broad distinction:
The printer’s model number is the reliable way to confirm which type it takes. Laser printers generally have “LaserJet”, “HL”, “imageCLASS”, “ECOSYS” or similar in the model’s name. Inkjet models carry “DeskJet”, “ENVY”, “PIXMA”, “WorkForce” and so on. When in doubt, enter the model into the Finder tool and it identifies the consumable type automatically.
If your HP printer uses ink rather than toner, browse HP ink cartridges for the correct consumable.
The upfront cost of a toner cartridge is higher than an ink cartridge. A standard mono toner for a Brother or HP LaserJet Pro might cost $40 to $80. A standard ink cartridge for a home DeskJet might cost $15 to $25. On the shelf, the ink looks cheaper.
Page yield is where the calculation reverses. A standard mono toner cartridge typically yields 1,500 to 3,000 pages depending on the model. A standard black ink cartridge for a home inkjet typically yields 150 to 300 pages. At those numbers, the toner cartridge costs 2 to 5 cents per page for mono laser printing. The ink cartridge costs 8 to 20 cents per page for the same output.
Compatible toner takes that cost-per-page advantage further. Compatible mono toner for popular HP, Brother and Kyocera models typically costs 40 to 60 percent less per cartridge than genuine, while delivering the same ISO-tested page yield. For an office printing 500 pages per week, that difference in running cost adds up to a meaningful saving over a year.
High-yield toner (X or XL variants) reduces cost per page further still. A standard Brother TN-2450 toner yields approximately 1,200 pages. The high-yield TN-2480 yields 3,000 pages. The high-yield costs more upfront but prints more than twice as many pages per cartridge at a lower cost each. The product listings on CartridgesDirect include ISO page yield and pricing for both yield tiers so you can run the comparison directly.
Genuine toner is manufactured by the printer brand. HP makes HP toner. Brother makes Brother toner. Kyocera makes Kyocera toner. These cartridges are formulated for each specific model, calibrated to its drum and fuser system, and backed by the manufacturer’s own yield testing. For colour-critical output, client-facing documents, legal printing and environments where exact colour reproduction matters consistently across a long run, genuine toner is the consistent choice.
Compatible toner is manufactured by independent suppliers to the same physical specification and ISO yield standard as the genuine equivalent. The cost difference is substantial: 40 to 60 percent less per cartridge on most popular models, wider again on high-yield variants. For mono office printing, invoices, internal documents, draft output and standard text documents, compatible toner produces results that are hard to distinguish from genuine on the page.
Under Australian Consumer Law, using compatible consumables does not automatically void your printer warranty. A manufacturer would need to demonstrate that the compatible cartridge caused the specific fault being claimed before a warranty claim could be refused on that basis. CartridgesDirect has stocked compatible toner for Australian businesses since 2006.
Mono (black and white) laser printers use a single black toner cartridge. This is the most common laser printer configuration in Australian small offices. Mono laser toner is the most cost-effective consumable option for text-heavy document printing. Compatible mono toner for HP LaserJet, Brother HL, Kyocera ECOSYS and Canon imageCLASS models is widely available and consistently well-priced.
Colour laser printers use four separate toner cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Each colour replaces independently when it runs low, so you’re not discarding unused toner from three other slots because one has run out. Colour laser toner sets cost more than mono and carry a bigger gap between genuine and compatible pricing. For small offices printing colour for internal purposes, compatible colour toner is worth a direct comparison against genuine before ordering.
Some brands, notably Kyocera, design their colour laser printers with a drum that is integrated into the printer chassis and rated to last the life of the machine. On Kyocera models, only the toner cartridge is replaced. On most other brands, HP, Brother, Canon, Lexmark and Fuji Xerox, toner and drum are either integrated into a single cartridge or replaced as separate components on different cycles. The product listing for each model specifies what the consumable set includes.
Most toner cartridge families come in standard yield and high yield options. The cartridge fits the same printer slot. The only difference is how much toner is inside and how many pages it produces before replacement.
The yield figure on each product listing is measured to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard for mono toner at 5%-page coverage. Full-coverage pages, graphics and dark backgrounds use more toner per page and will produce fewer pages per cartridge than the rated yield. The ISO figure is a reliable comparative reference between cartridges, not a guarantee of exact output.

Toner cartridges have a much longer shelf life than ink cartridges. Because toner is a dry powder rather than a liquid, it doesn’t dry out or clog in storage. Most genuine and compatible toner cartridges carry a best-before date 24 to 36 months from manufacture, and even beyond that date the toner itself typically remains usable if stored correctly.
For best results, store unused toner cartridges in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep them in the original sealed packaging and store horizontally or as indicated on the box. Avoid storage near heat sources or in environments with high humidity. Toner stored under these conditions will be in good condition when installed, regardless of how long it sat on the shelf.
Once installed in the printer, toner doesn’t degrade between print runs the way ink does. A laser printer left idle for two weeks will print cleanly as soon as it’s turned on. There are no cleaning cycles that consume toner during startup, and no nozzle-clogging risk from non-use.
CartridgesDirect proudly partners with Cartridges 4 Planet Ark to support responsible cartridge recycling. Every eligible cartridge order includes a free, postage-paid recycling satchel. Once you’ve collected at least eight empty cartridges, simply seal the satchel and place it in any Australia Post roadside mailbox. The cartridges are then returned to Close the Loop, where they are dismantled and the materials are recovered and recycled.
Check the cartridge number printed on your current toner cartridge or inside the printer's toner bay. Alternatively, enter your printer model number into the Finder tool and it returns every confirmed toner for that device, including standard and high-yield options and both genuine and compatible alternatives. Toner cartridges are printer-specific, and even two printers of the same brand can take different cartridges.
For mono office printing, invoices, internal documents and standard text output, compatible toner produces results that are difficult to distinguish from genuine on the page. Compatible toner is manufactured to the same cartridge specification and ISO yield standard as the genuine equivalent, at 40 to 60 percent less per cartridge. Where genuine earns its price is colour-critical client-facing output, long print runs where colour consistency matters throughout the job, and printers under service contracts that specify genuine consumables. CartridgesDirect stocks both and lists them side by side on every applicable Brother toner cartridges page.
Under Australian Consumer Law, using compatible consumables does not automatically void your printer warranty. The manufacturer would need to demonstrate that the compatible toner caused the specific fault being claimed before refusing a warranty claim on that basis. One situation requires separate consideration, printers under managed service contracts that specify genuine consumables. Outside that, compatible toner is a legitimate option under Australian law. CartridgesDirect has supplied compatible toner to Australian businesses since 2006.
Standard yield and high yield toner for the same printer fit the same slot and produce the same output quality. The only difference is how much toner is inside and how many pages result before replacement. High yield cartridges cost more upfront but deliver a lower cost per page. For offices printing under 100 pages per week, standard yield is usually sufficient. For offices printing 100 or more pages per week, high yield reduces per-page cost and replacement frequency meaningfully.
Toner does not dry out the way liquid ink does. It is a dry powder with a shelf life of 24 to 36 months from manufacture when stored correctly. A sealed toner cartridge stored in a cool, dry location away from sunlight will be in good condition well beyond that date in most cases. Once installed in the printer, toner does not degrade between print runs. A laser printer left idle for weeks will print normally on the next job without cleaning cycles or wasted consumable, one of the practical advantages of toner over ink for offices with intermittent print volumes.
Mono laser toner typically costs 2 to 5 cents per page, depending on the cartridge model and yield tier. Compatible mono toner at the lower end of that range delivers the lowest cost per page of any printing technology for black text documents. Colour laser toner costs more per page, typically 10 to 20 cents per full-colour page depending on coverage and the model. To calculate cost per page for a specific cartridge, divide the price by the ISO page yield listed on the product page. CartridgesDirect lists both standard and high-yield options with pricing and yield side by side.
CartridgesDirect is a Cartridges 4 Planet Ark partner. A free postage-paid recycling satchel is included with every eligible cartridge order. Collect a minimum of eight empty cartridges, seal the satchel and drop it at any Australia Post roadside mailbox. Cartridges are returned to and processed by Close The Loop, who strip and recycle the materials. Both genuine and compatible toner cartridges are eligible, and no separate registration or account is needed.
Mono toner is a single black cartridge used in black-and-white laser printers. It is the most cost-effective option for text-heavy document printing. Colour toner comes as a set of four cartridges, black, cyan, magenta and yellow, and colour laser printers use all four to produce the full colour range. Each colour replaces independently when it runs low. Colour toner sets cost more than mono equivalents. For offices printing mostly black text, a mono laser with compatible toner delivers the lowest overall printing cost.
CartridgesDirect stocks toner for a broad range of current and discontinued laser printer models across all major brands, particularly through the compatible range. Genuine toner for older models is often discontinued by manufacturers when a printer reaches end-of-life support status, but compatible manufacturers continue producing cartridges for models still running in Australian offices. Use the Finder tool to check availability by model. If your model is not listed, contact us via live chat and we will confirm whether stock is available. If you are outfitting a mixed-brand office, our HP ink cartridges range covers the same current and legacy model support.
