Replacing 564 and 564XL Ink Cartridge Tutorial

This document is intended as a tutorial to help you change the ink cartridges on your HP Photosmart printer. The same methodology can also be used for the Officejet range of printers, however, the reporting will differ slightly for the Officejet range.

Replacing Ink Cartridges

Step one:

If the printer is turned off, press the power button to turn the printer on and then wait for the printer to be idle and silent before continuing.

Open the lid of the printer, the ink cartridge carrier should move across to the access area of your printer.

Step Two:

Press firmly down on the front of the ink cartridge to release it, you should see the cartridge release and the back of there cartridge lift free from the carriage. Remove the cartridge from the printer and dispose of thoughtfully.

Remove the plastic wrap from the new cartridge by pulling the orange tab and the peeling away.

Step Three:

Step Four:

Remove the orange cap from the cartridge. Twist the cap counter-clockwise until it snaps off. At this point pay particular attention to the opening at the base of the cartridge to ensure that your fingers don't make contact with this area. Any contact can cause clogging of the ink flow.

Step Five:

With the nozzle and the contacts facing down, push the cartridge into its slot. Press down on the rear edge of the cartridge until it clicks into place, making sure that the color icon on the cartridge label matches the color icon on the slot in the carriage.

Step Six:

Close the Cartridge access (lid) door.
