Canon Printers: A Record of Development and Innovation
By Simon Williams - 29th Nov 2016

As one of the leading manufacturers of office and imaging technology it is interesting to see how the company started and evolved, through innovation, to its current position. Starting in a small room in Tokyo around 80 years ago, Canon technology began with Japan’s first 35mm camera. This catapulted Canon into the forefront of modern imaging technology, paving the way for more and more technology innovation to come.

During the 1960’s Canon developed, and introduced, a range of electronic office equipment. In 1969 they changed their name from Canon Camera Company to Canon Inc to better reflect these new products. In 1970, Canon Inc launched the first plain paper copier from Japan.

This led to the development of the laser printer engine, which is the unit within a laser printer that does the actual printing.and includes the laser and mechanism to transfer the toner onto the paper. This device was used in early laser printers such as the Apple LaserWriter and the early HP laser printers.

At the same time Canon along with HP and others, were busy developing an even more revolutionary printing method; the Inkjet Bubble printer. In this technology, which is still used today in Inkjet Printers, the ink is heated rapidly until a bubble, with a very thin shin, is formed and forced through a miniscule hole in the printhead. It comes into contact with the paper and cools instantly to form a single dot of ink.All the dots are joined up to form a letter, number or illustration..

Making its mark in the printing industry, Canon is constantly inventing new ways to carry out office tasks and improving the performance of their products. In 2005, Canon launched their new range of dye based inks to replace the more traditional pigment based inks, This development produced an ink that minimises clogging of the printhead and gives better resolution a higher gloss and longer life. Canon was officially established in Australia in 1978, their long term commitment to the Australian market was shown with establishment of an Australian research laboratory in 1990, along with the acquisition of various businesses along the way to gain resources and experience to drive better results for their customers.Market leadingConcentrating on customer-focused solutions, Canon is a technology company that not only strives to meet customer demand but to go beyond it.
